How To Care For Your Boots

Altama-secondary-copy

Listed below are many ways to care for your boots.

1) Clean: Remove excess dirt with a stiff brush or damp cloth. Rub surface with SADDLE SOAP and a moist cloth to develop lather. Rub well into the leather and wipe off excess with a damp cloth. Repeat procedure if necessary. When leather is dry, buff with a soft cloth to develop luster.

2) Condition: Make sure article is clean and dry before applying. Work a thin coat of MINK OIL into leather and seams with a cloth or dauber. Wipe off excess immediately and allow to dry for several hours.  NOTE: Mink oil should not be used on suede (all Altama Desert Boots).

3) Restore: Remove all polish with a cloth dipped in household cleaning solvent (I suggest detergent vs. solvent…some people may interpret solvent as mineral spirits, etc.). Shake well. Apply a LEATHER DYE in circular strokes until leather is covered.

4) Polish (Full-grain boots only – not suede):

  1. If possible, clean with saddle soap to remove previous polishes and dirt.  This sets up the leather for a new coat of polish and will promote leather softening and the best results for shine.  NOTE: Do not use saddle soap on suede (desert boots).
  2. Apply polish with a cloth or dauber. Allow to dry. Buff to gloss. For extra high shine, apply another light coat, sprinkle with water and buff with a soft cloth.
  3. HONOR GUARD INSTANT SPIT SHINE - Shake well with cap on. Shoes must be clean and dry. Invert bottle; gently press applicator against shoe to release product. Spread polish evenly. Dries to a shine.
  4. PARADE GLOSS - Apply polish with cloth or dauber. Let dry 1-2 minutes. Brush to bright lasting shine. For heightened gloss, apply another light coat, sprinkle with water and buff with soft cloth.

5) Weatherproof: Articles should be clean and thoroughly dry before treating. Remove dust and dirt by brushing. Spot test light-covered leather and canvas for color change as silicones may impart a slightly darker, richer tone. Hold can upright 7-10" away. Spray entire surface evenly. Do not saturate. Treat 2-3 times for maximum protection, including leather soles. Allow 4 hours between applications and allow articles to dry completely before using.

Break In Suggestions:

  1. Before constant use, wear for short periods of time to acclimate both feet and boot to new environment . We suggest rotating with a broken-in pair for a period of time. Try 30 minutes the first day and then increasing by 30 minutes each additional day.
  2. Apply silicone based polish often to full grain leather boots (not suede) - this helps soften leather.
  3. Always wear boot socks.

Note : We find furniture polish ( Pledge ) very useful in softening and maintaining a shine on full-grain leather products .

Suggested upkeep of Full Grain finished boots:

  1. Keep dust and mud brushed off boots.
  2. Polish full grain leather boots often with a polish containing silicone - this will prevent leather from getting hard and stiff.
  3. Occasionally wipe inside of boots with moist, soapy rag.
  4. Never dry wet boots near intense heat - this may damage the leather and other components of boots. Dry only in sun or at room temperature.
  5. To speed the drying process in heavily wet products, remove the innersoles when possible.

Suggested upkeep of unfinished ( suede ) boots:

  1. Keep dust and mud brushed off boots.  For best results, use a stiff suede brush or a lightweight metal bristle brush.  When using a metal bristle brush, brush in soft, light strokes and avoid hard repetitive rubbing with the brush.
  2. Occasionally wipe inside of boots with moist , soapy rag.
  3. Never dry wet boots near intense heat - this will destroy leather and other components of boots. Dry only in sun or at room temperature.
  4. To speed the drying process in heavily wet products, remove the innersoles when possible.

Listed below are ways to keep your feet from blistering while breaking in your new pair of ALTAMA boots:

  • Make sure that your boots fit - you should have approximately half an inch of room above your big toe.
  • Put on a thin pair of nylon socks.
  • Add a pair normal padded boot socks over the nylon socks.
  • Step into your pair of ALTAMAs and lace them snugly.

Wearing the thin nylon socks under the pair of traditional combat boots socks keeps your skin from sliding and blistering in your new boots.
